Cabinet Refinishing & Refacing in Sherman Oaks, CA

Kitchen cabinet refinishing in Sherman Oaks is mostly a question of what is already behind the doors. Most of the kitchens we open here were framed out of solid lumber and real plywood, in houses built while the Valley was still being subdivided. That construction is worth keeping; the finish, the hardware and often the door profile are not.

Our shop is on Sherman Way in North Hollywood. Sherman Oaks is not one kind of housing: it runs from the Los Angeles River, which forms part of its northern boundary, up into the hills toward Mulholland, across ZIP codes 91401, 91403 and 91423. A flat-lot ranch in Chandler Estates, a Ventura Boulevard condo and a hillside house off Valley Vista are three different jobs.

What's actually behind the doors in a Sherman Oaks kitchen

Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman, a partner in the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company, developed Sherman Oaks out of a thousand acres the company subdivided; the land was selling by 1927. Little of that first wave survives, and what stands now is largely a postwar build-out – good news for anyone weighing cabinet refinishing. Cabinets of that period are face-frame boxes in solid stock and real plywood, scribed to a plaster jamb, and nearly always worth saving.

The name that comes up most on estimates here is William Mellenthin, who built more than 3,000 homes in Southern California from the 1920s to the 1960s and in 1951 bought the twelve-and-a-half-acre Sherman Oaks estate of actor Buck Jones. His “birdhouse ranches” carry a cupola on the roof, diamond-pane windows and a Dutch door – and inside, wood-beamed ceilings, paneling and built-in cabinets and bookcases. Those built-ins are the argument for refinishing rather than ripping out: under decades of ambered lacquer the wood is usually clean.

The flats north of the boulevard behave differently. Chandler Estates – six square blocks centered on Chandler Boulevard just north of the Ventura Freeway, petitioned into Sherman Oaks in 1991 – and Magnolia Woods, a forty-five-block area that followed weeks later, are largely houses built from the 1950s onward and often remodeled once already. That second-generation cabinetry is another animal: particleboard boxes, oak raised-panel doors, sometimes thermofoil. Those are refacing kitchens. Up in Longridge Estates, Royal Woods and the streets off Valley Vista, the custom hillside houses run to flush-overlay slab doors.

Refinish, reface, or don't bother - how we call it

Refinish when the boxes are solid, the doors are real wood and still flat, and the layout works. Strip or sand to bare, repair the burn-through around the pulls, re-glue loose joints, prime and spray. You keep the original doors – on a Mellenthin built-in that is the whole point.

Reface when the boxes are sound but the doors are the problem: warped, delaminating, or a raised-panel oak profile nobody wants. New doors and fronts, new veneer over the face frames, new hinges and pulls; footprint, plumbing and counters stay. That is the call for most eighties- and nineties-era kitchens.

Don’t bother in a few cases, and we would rather say so on the estimate than halfway through. Thermofoil doors are a vinyl film laminated to an MDF core; once the film lifts and the core swells there is nothing flat to sand and nothing sound to bond to. Same for a sink base gone soft – a water problem, not a finish problem, and one for water damage restoration first. And if the layout itself is wrong, refinishing the cabinets just gets you a shiny bad kitchen; that is a kitchen refinishing conversation instead.

Getting the work done on a Sherman Oaks street

Doors, fronts and hardware come off first, tagged by opening, and go to the shop to be sprayed flat – spraying horizontal is the difference between a finish that lays down and a run at the bottom rail. Boxes and face frames are done in place behind containment.

Where you live changes the logistics. South of Ventura Boulevard the lanes climb, and Los Angeles has a classification for the narrowest of them: a substandard hillside limited street, improved to a roadway width of less than twenty feet. Nothing large parks outside for the day on one of those. Along the Ventura and Riverside corridors the constraint is the building instead – elevator bookings, work-hour windows, and shared ventilation that rules out spraying inside a unit.

One local quirk: the Valley ranch plan opens the kitchen straight into a den with no door between, and Mellenthin’s plans do it constantly. There is no shutting the work off from the rest of the house, so dust extraction is not optional.

Apartment and condo turns: cabinets and the bathroom in one visit

Sherman Oaks is a renter’s neighborhood as much as an owner’s – at the 2000 census renters occupied 58.9% of the housing stock against 41.1% owner-occupied – and the multifamily stock along Riverside Drive and Ventura Boulevard is largely mid-century. Chase Knolls at 13411 Riverside Drive is the landmark case: 260 original units on thirteen acres, built 1947-1949 to designs by Heth Wharton and Ralph Vaughn, and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

For property managers that combination is the job: cabinets refinished or refaced while the tub, surround tile and vanity top are reglazed on the same turn, so a unit comes back renewed without a dumpster in the carport. Bathtub and tile reglazing is the highest-leverage move on a dated bathroom here – the pink or seafoam fifties wall tile everyone assumes must be demolished can be recoated in place.

What else usually comes up while we're there

Cabinets are rarely the only tired surface in a house this age. Countertop refinishing seals a laminate or tile counter with grout you have stopped scrubbing, without disturbing the sink. Plenty of Sherman Oaks ranches still have original oak strip flooring carpeted over decades ago – hardwood floor refinishing generally beats a floating floor laid on top.

Then there is everything that is not a cabinet: beamed ceilings, paneling, built-in bookcases, the Dutch door. Wood refinishing and staining covers those; matching a repaired built-in to a refinished kitchen is easier when one shop does both. The full list is on our services page. We have been living in our newly renovated home for about six months, so I can confidently provide a review of our contractor and the work done at our residence. Working with Hollywood Refinishing on our remodel was a journey that culminated in a beautiful, warm, and inviting space. We have a 25-year-old house that needed an update, and we decided to remodel an entire floor. This included a new kitchen, dining area, bar, family living room, patio, and powder room. When selecting a contractor to take on our project, we were impressed by Tarwat's patience (it took us several months to decide), his upbeat attitude, and his candidness as to what to expect regarding timelines and end results. In fact, he allowed us to tour one of his projects to assess the quality of work (this was so key to deciding to move forward). He was also readily available for any questions via phone or text. His workers (the same crew) came daily and were polite, respectful, and excellent at their craft. Throughout the project, we got to know and trust them, and I appreciated not having new/different people show up at the job site. His subcontractors were well-vetted and also produced stellar work. The key attributes that I appreciated about Tarwat and his crew were the level of communication and collaboration between us, as they recognized that a renovation is so personal to the homeowner and that decisions made will affect the end result in terms of timing, functionality, and cost. They were mindful of that and tried to partner with us to realize our vision. Suffice it to say that I would work with Tarwat again, and, in fact, I am planning another project with Hollywood Refinishing soon.

Phenomenal job by Tarwat and his team on our kitchen cabinet project recently- they refinished our cabinets, added soft close hinges and glides, converted a cabinet into 2 deep drawers, and added pullout drawers to our pantry. I couldn't be happier with the results! It has really elevated the look and functionality of our kitchen, and I absolutely love looking at and feeling the smooth finish on our cabinets. Price was great too, significantly cheaper than a few other quotes including Home Depot. Would recommend without hesitation!

We remodeled our Kitchen in 2005 and things were looking a little dated by 2023 with the picked white oak arch cabinet doors and drawers. I called the "local" guys that advertise all over the radio for a bid and they came out the next day. The salesman was at our house for over three hours and we had to sit through a sales presentation on his Ipad...then he hit us with the bid. It started with a 7 and was almost an 8!! Once we got him to leave, we started looking locally (on Yelp!) and found Tarwat. He came out and gave us a bid that was 1/3rd the cost of the "other" guys...I got a good feeling from him, so I signed the bid, put the deposit down and got the process started. The neat thing about Hollywood Refinishing and Tarwat is that he gets the drawers and doors made then he comes out and actually fits them in place before they are finished - this way we know for sure everything is going to fit correctly! Amazing!! The result is simply stunning, better than I thought it could be. His guys show up on time and when he says, no extra costs. Dont hesitate, it is kind of a PITA because you have to empty the cabinets and the painting is kind of smelly (his guys use fans to keep the smell down and covered the kitchen in plastic so there was no overspray), but we ended up trashing a bunch of stuff we did not use or forgot we had, so we have even more room! We did all new doors and drawer fronts painted in custom colors, matching crown moulding, new soft close drawer glides and hinges along with new roll outs for the pantry and spice cabinets. A++++. Plus - Tarwat is always happy, and returns your calls/texts. Get him now before you cant!!

We bought a house recently. The kitchen cabinet is made of old-style solid oak wood. They are in good condition; they just look outdated. I wanted to reface the cabinet in the beginning, but the cost of the refacing costs more than 20k. To keep our good-quality cabinet doors. I decided to refinish the cabinets. It was hard to find a refinishing company. I am glad to find Hollywood Refinishing on Yelp. This is the only refinishing service that I find with good reviewing. And the work of Hollywood Refinishing is worth five stars. The owner Tarwat is very friendly, honest, and professional. Their crews are all experienced. They painted all cabinets, fixed the drawers and doors, and installed soft-closure hinges. The texture of the new painting is so smooth. My kitchen turns out to be a brand new modern kitchen. Their price is fair. We are fully satisfied with the job.

It has been over a year since Tarwat and crew came to put our refinished cabinet doors on. One of them had come loose so I messaged Tarwat and he very graciously sent his crew to fix the door. They not only did the one door that we had an issue with, but tightened and secured some of the others that could have issues down the road. Now they are as good as new, and I needed to write this review to express how very pleased I am that hollywood refinishing is standing by their work. These days that doesn't always happen with services. Thank you Tarwat and crew!

Tarwat and his team did a superb job refacing our kitchen cabinets, as well as some finish carpentry work that we'd been hoping to get done for many years. We called Hollywood Refinishing to rescue a kitchen remodel gone wrong. Excellent craftsmanship and attitude! We would use them again without hesitation.

We had our kitchen refinished in June. Tarwat came out and gave us a very competitive price after checking the reviews we went with him, at the time he was handling several jobs at the same time so the whole job took a little longer than expected but my wife the house chef and I could not be happier with the finished product. The crew took care of everything in a very professional way and anything we asked about was taken care of. Look no further if you are thinking of refinishing your kitchen. Call that Big Liverpool supporter Tarwat he will take care of everything.

I reached out to Tarwat with the tall order of converting what was essentially a modest windowless cinder block storage room into a workable home office. Right off the bat, he was able to accommodate a range of very specific requests related to getting the space into the shape I needed. From demo, framing, and electrical, to paint, hardware installation, and adding a custom window (in a spot never intended for one, but that now looks specifically designed for one), everything was done with a really, really high level of quality and attention to detail. We also had a custom cabinet added to our kitchen, which also came out great. Tarwat and his team followed through with every aspect of the job and exceeded my expectations at each step in the process. It'd be easy to go on with the praise, but bottom line is that the end result we arrived at is easily two letter grades above what my hopes for the space were. Could not be happier. My only regret was that I didn't reach out way back in 2020 so I could've enjoyed my new home office during lockdown. I'm eager to tackle more projects in the future with Hollywood Refinishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

They can almost always be refinished. The orange, yellowed look is usually the old lacquer, not the wood. Sanded to bare and re-stained, pine reads far cooler than owners expect - but it is soft and blotchy, so it needs a conditioner before stain.

Almost certainly not. That is thermofoil - a vinyl film laminated over an MDF core. Once the film lifts the core swells, leaving nothing flat to sand and nothing sound to bond to. The boxes behind are usually fine, so it is a strong refacing candidate.

No, but it changes how the job runs. Los Angeles classifies its narrowest hillside lanes as substandard hillside limited streets, improved to under twenty feet of roadway. We stage a smaller vehicle and run doors to the shop in loads.

Yes - a common pairing in the mid-century buildings along Riverside and Ventura. Cabinets are refinished or refaced while the tub, surround tile and vanity top are reglazed, with no demolition and no plumbing changes. Send the building constraints up front: work-hour windows, elevator booking, shared return air.
